DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

  1. Chromotography (column, TLC and paper): It is a method of separation and identification of constituents present in the mixture based on adsorption or partition.
  2. Distillation: Methods of separation and purification of components present in the liquid of same mixture (Rectified spirit, absolute alcohol, fractional distillation).
  3. Detection of Nitrogen, Sulphur and Halogens in an organic compound: Lassaigne’s test: It is used to detect the presence of elements: Nitrogen (N), Sulpur (S), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br) and Iodine (I).
  4. Metal displacement: More electropositive metal displaces less electropositive metal from its salt solution.
  5. Nature of oxides of metals and non-metals: An oxide may be acidic, basic, neutral and amphoteric. Demonstrate the formation and identification of oxides from metal and non-metals.
  6. pH paper, litmus paper, starch iodide paper: pH papers are used to get the pH ( acidic, basic and neutral.) Litmus paper: To identify whether a solution is acidic or basic. Starch iodide paper: It is used to identify the liberation of Cl2.
  7. Bravais Lattice: Models of simple cube, face centered cube, body centered cube, etc.
  8. Distilled and deionized water: Description, preparation of distilled water and deionized water on the respective instruments.
  9. Recycling of plastics: Plastics are a part and parcel of our life. Every minute the used plastics are dumped on the earth. So, recycling is to be done to have clean environment and a waste utilization.
  10. Food additives: No food grain or packed food is free from addition, for imparting colour, presentation increase the shelf etc.,
  11. Depression of freezing point: Depression of freezing point of solvent is decreased by the addition of solute.
  12. Osmosis/reverse osmosis: Osmosis is important in both chemical science and biological science. Reverse osmosis is used to get pure water from salt water.
  13. Electroplating: Certain metals are coated with less electron positive metal to protect them from corrosion. It is also done for decorative purposes.
