Department of Chemistry

The department of chemistry was started in the year 1964 with the undergraduate course having affiliation to Madras University and was elevated to a postgraduate department in 1979. The department got recognition for offering M.Phil. programme of Bharathiar University in 1987. The department became a full pledged research centre after we got approval for offering Ph.D. programme from 1999.

The autonomous status was conferred to UG and PG programmes in the years 1981 and 1986 respectively. The sanctioned strength of the UG programme is 40 and that of the PG programme is 20. The current sanctioned strength of students for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes is 26 each.

All the faculty members of the department are Ph.D. holders guiding students for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The department has undertaken research activities in thrust areas like Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry, Solid State Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Electro Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry.

To inculcate research attitude in students and to harness the expertise of eminent persons in various fields of research, seminars, conferences and workshops are organized periodically.

The research activities of the department are supported by various funding agencies like UGC, CSIR etc. The department to its credit has considerable number of publications in reputed national and international journals of high standard in various areas of research. Further, many of the staff members of the department are rendering their services as reviewers for reputed international journals.
